Nine Lander University students will spend the fall 2010 semester studying at foreign universities as part of Lander's Study Abroad Program.
To qualify for the program students must complete two semesters at Lander. The credits they earn abroad count toward the academic requirements necessary for a Lander degree.
Five of the students will be enrolled in the University of Winchester in England. The students and their majors are: Miranda Gartman of Irmo, biology; Wesley Leonard of Clinton, mass communication; Bethany Manders of Beech Island, education; Rade Musulin of Hilton Head, mathematics; and Vito Ward of Spartanburg, biology.
Sheena Green of Charleston and Mikaela Lockett of Seneca, both Spanish majors, will enroll in Spanish language programs; Green at the University of Nicaragua and Lockett at TANDEM Madrid in Spain. Spanish majors must study or travel in a Spanish-speaking country to meet their degree requirements.
Elizabethe Johnson of Greenwood will become the first Lander Study Abroad student to study in Japan. Johnson, a visual arts major, will spend a semester at Kwansei Gaikuin University in Osaka.
James Neff of Boiling Springs, who is also a visual arts major, has been accepted into the University of Georgia Studies Abroad Program in Cortina, Italy.
Lander's Study Abroad is open to all students. Students who have completed at least one semester of study are eligible to participate in Lander's faculty-led study tours which are scheduled at spring break and in the summer.
DeWitt Stone, director of the Study Abroad Program, said, in the past five years, 43 Lander students have completed regular semesters at overseas colleges and universities and another nine have taken advantage of summer term study tours.
Lander also offers foreign study opportunities through its Honors International Program and the university's new Global Scholars program.
