Lander University Students Honored for Academic Excellence, Extracurricular Service

Lander University recently honored its co-curricular standouts for the 2010-11 academic year, presenting student life awards to the university's top students and student organizations. The awards were announced during Lander's annual Academic and Student Life Awards Ceremony.

Lander president Dr. Daniel Ball presented senior business administration major Marina Morgan with the prestigious President's Award, given annually in recognition of unique exemplification of the ethic of service to the university community. Morgan, a resident of Greenwood, is a member of the Lander Presidential Ambassadors, the co-curricular committee, the judiciary committee and the Lander University Cheer and Dance Team.

The 2011 Lander Homecoming Queen, Morgan has been on the Dean's List from 2009-2011, and she was selected as Dancer of the Month for October 2010 and January 2011.

Sociology major Demario Watts of Clinton and mass communication major Kirsten Stewart of Spartanburg were named Lander University Man and Woman of the Year.

The 2011 Homecoming King, Watts is a member of Chi Alpha Omega fraternity, the student life council, the Baptist Collegiate Ministry and the Blue Key Honor Society. He is a resident assistant, a Lander Presidential Ambassador and the recipient of the Ella Brooks Coleman Scholarship.

Stewart is a member of the Student Government Association, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Baptist Collegiate Ministry, the Blue Key Honor Society and the Alpha Chi Honor Society. She also serves on the grade, judicial and endowed professorship committees. A Presidential Ambassador, Stewart has received honors such as the Sportsmanship Award. Her grades have earned her a place on the Dean's list and President's list, and she was a finalist in the 2011 Student Scholarship Showcase.

Lander's Greek Man and Woman of the Year awards went to physical education major William S. Clark of Newberry and business administration and mass communication major Lanesha Campbell-Alston of Charleston.

Clark is vice president of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He has volunteered with Adopt a Highway, Self Regional's Halloween Spooktacular and the Connie Maxwell Easter egg hunt.

A Presidential Ambassador, Campbell-Alston is a member of Lander's Honors International Program, Alpha Psi Omega Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and the Blue Key Honor Society. She is the recipient of the Alumni Mass Communication and Theatre Scholarship, the Jean O'Brian Burnes Scholarship, the Fine Arts Divisional Scholarship, the Leo and Louise McMullin Scholarship and the Morris Street Baptist Church Scholarship.
