Carolina Sadurski, of Greenwood, held a handful of fire for a split second as part of a thermodynamics demonstration during a recent Fuji Summer Science and Mathematics program at Lander University. Sadurski, a sixth- grader at Westview Middle School, was one of 18 students in the class led by Dr. David Slimmer, dean of Lander's College of Science and Mathematics, left. The students first wet their hands with water then scooped up soapsuds infiltrated with methane gas. Slimmer applied a flame and a flash of fire erupted. The experience was startling but not painful. Slimmer explained that, because their hands were wet, the students were protected from injury.
