Top Science and Mathematics Scholars Honored at Annual Academic and Student Life Awards Ceremony

More than 50 Lander University students were honored recently for their scholastic accomplishments during the 2011-2012 academic year, receiving the top discipline and special awards from the university's four academic colleges. The awards were presented during Lander's annual Academic and Student Life Awards ceremony.
Receiving discipline awards from the College of Science and Mathematics were:
Jason Magnuson, of Swansea, Biology Award;
Russell Turner, of Ware Shoals, Computer Science Award;
Samantha Seawright, of Donalds, Mathematics Award;
Paige Kight, of Florence, Prelicensure Nursing Award;
Deborah Milling, of Charleston, RN-BSN Award;
Joseph Bridgman, of Honea Path, Chemistry Award;
Vicktoria Hernandez, of Lexington, Engineering/Chemistry Dual Degree Award;
Luke Abel, of Blythewood, Environmental Science Award;
Zachary McCaslin, of North Augusta, Physics-Calculus Award; and
Nicholas Pandorf, of Dalzell, Physics-Algebra Award.

Receiving special awards from the College of Science and Mathematics were:
Anyway Kapingidza, of Marondera, Zimbabwe, the Science Scholar Award, presented to students demonstrating the most promise among science majors;
Garrett Matthews, of Lincolnton, Ga., the Science Scholar Award;
Jennifer Lovvorn, of Hodges, the Science Scholar Award, and the Nell Henry Award, honoring former professor Nell Henry and presented to a rising senior biology major who has potential for future scholastic achievement and contributions to the field of biology;
Ulyss Roesner, of Saluda, the Science Scholar Award;
Carrie Forrest, of Pauline, the Mathematical Association of America Award;
Rade Musulin, of Hilton Head Island, the Mathematical Association of America Award; and
Jordan Bennett, of Clover, the Tapp-Freese Memorial Award, named in honor of Lander nursing professor emeritus Dr. Barbara Freese's parents and given to a senior nursing major with the highest cumulative GPA and who is enrolled in honors study.
