Through the support of Lander University faculty, staff and students, Tommy Tumblin, a custodian at Lander University, is able to bring lots of Christmas cheer to area children as "Tommy Claus."
Tumblin is asking the Greenwood and Lander communities to continue their tradition of providing gifts this Christmas for those less fortunate. And while Tumblin collects toys throughout the year, he always makes a big push to collect more just before the holiday season. This year that push will begin Nov. 15, when numerous "Tommy Claus" drop boxes setup across campus for toy donations. However, those wishing to donate can contact Tumblin anytime between now and Dec. 14.
"There is plenty of need and we have plenty of room," said Tumblin.
Tumblin hopes to collect enough new and used toys this year to deliver to dozens of youth and families. He is accepting used toys of all types for ages 4-6.
As "Tommy Claus," Tumblin will also join the Bikers for Christ and Straight Shooters motorcycle clubs for a "Toy Run" on Saturday, Dec. 8. The ride begins at the Greenwood Civic Center and ends at Joel's Floor Coverings on Montague Avenue, also known as "Tommy Claus' North Pole."
For information on scheduling an appearance by Tommy Claus or to donate toys directly, contact Tumblin at 864-229-0137. Those in need of toys can also contact Tumblin to make an appointment for toy pick-up. Those wishing to be added to the list to receive toys, can call the above number starting, Monday, Nov 26. Toys will be distributed by appointment only on Friday, Dec. 14, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 15, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
