Lander University student and faculty musical ensembles will pool their talents and present a collage concert on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m., in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium.
The concert, called Musiktoberfest, is billed as an evening of music by German composers.
Performers will be members of Lander's Wind and Jazz ensembles, a piano duo; the faculty Brass and Woodwind quintets; Student Brass; the Old Main Singers and the University Singers.
Dr. Robert Gardiner, associate professor of music at Lander and a saxophonist in the Jazz Ensemble, is one of the concert organizers. He said it will be "one seamless performance," and explained that all of the musical groups will be on the darkened stage at the same time with the spotlight trained on individuals and ensembles as they perform. The program will proceed from one selection to the next without applause in between.
He described the concert as offering a contrast in styles of music ranging from Ave Maria, by Franz Biebel, to compositions by Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Wagner, Johann Strauss, and others.
Gardiner said the Jazz Ensemble will perform two popular standards written by Kurt Weill: Mack the Knife, from his most well-known work, The Threepenny Opera, and September Song, which Weill wrote for the 1938 Broadway musical Knickerbocker Holiday.
The collage concert is free and open to the public.
