Lander Set for 2nd Annual Bearcat Breakout 5K

breacat-breakout-TN.jpgFor the second year in a row, Lander University's Physical Education and Exercise Studies (PEES) Club will host the Annual Bearcat Breakout 5K. This year's 3.1-mile run will begin at 9 a.m., on Feb. 23.

When asked why the club decided to sponsor the race, Lander assistant professor of exercise science Leland Nielsen said, "Putting on a 5k can provide our students with a great experience that involves leadership, planning, service, and, of course, exercise."

The race is also intended to promote the health and fitness of the community through adopting an active lifestyle. The club seeks to provide outreach within the area by donating all proceeds to a local organization or charity that embodies the spirit and promotes the strong values of the Greenwood community. For the second year the organization of choice is Connie Maxwell Children's Home. "This year we plan to designate the money for their 'Girls on the Run' program," said Nielsen.

"We felt that they were a wonderful example of a Greenwood-based organization that exists to serve others and fulfill a critical societal need," he added. "Every dollar that we generate as profit goes directly to Connie Maxwell Children's Home."

Through this donation and hosting the run at Lander, the club hopes the event will contribute to the partnership Lander has with the surrounding community.

The 2nd Annual Bearcat Breakout 5K is open to the public and the course will wind through the Lander University campus. The entry fee is $10 for Lander faculty, staff and students, and $15 for all other participants. The fee includes a free T-shirt, participation in the 5k run and post race activities. The T-shirt is not guaranteed for registrations received after Feb. 15.
