Lander University is playing host to young, would-be scientists during the annual Fuji Summer Science and Math Enrichment program. A class called The Magic of Chemistry attracted 22 students, rising 6th- through 9th-graders, who spent a week exploring a variety of chemical topics under the supervision of Dr. David Slimmer, dean of Lander's College of Science and Mathematics, and Dr. Ralph Layland, chair of the Department of Physical Sciences. They are also chemistry professors. Dawson Thompson, left, and Eric Gardner, both of Greenwood and both rising 6th graders at Westview Middle School, team up in the laboratory on an experiment dealing with acids and bases. They and others enrolled in the Fuji program also get a taste of spending time on a college campus.
