Lander University students and faculty will continue piling up frequent flyer miles over the summer, taking advantage of international study in several countries. Dr. DeWitt Stone, director of Lander's Study Abroad Program, said before the year is out, 13 faculty members will have led 67 students on study tours in Europe, Central America and Asia.
During the spring break in March, assistant professor of theatre Jennifer Sansfacon, English and foreign languages adjunct faculty member Lauren Woolbright and eight students visited London for a British literature study tour.
Associate professor of English Lillian Craton and assistant professor of political science Lucas McMillan will escort 18 students on a literature and politics tour of Britain and Ireland. Assistant professor of psychology Mandy Cleveland, professor emeritus of history Jean Paquette and six students will tour regions in Germany and Austria that figured prominently in Nazism in World War II.
Associate professor of Spanish Carlos Mentley and two students will travel to France and Spain for the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage walk.
There will be an art and art history tour of Italy for 18 students led by assistant professors of art Sandy Singletary and Elizabeth Snipes.
Nine students in Lander's William Preston Turner School of Nursing will travel to Honduras for a Volunteers in Medical Missions trip led by assistant professor of nursing Leslie Myers and nursing instructor Ashley Lee.
Lander's Office of International Programs arranged for six students to take part in an Asian culture and history study tour in China and Korea. They were escorted by assistant professor of business administration Stanley Vinson and associate professor of Spanish Pedro Lopes.
During the summer, four Lander students will study abroad. Psychology major Erika Davis, of Hodges, and Stephen Sanders, an English major from Greenwood, will be enrolled at Pembroke and Kings Colleges, in Cambridge, England. Nursing majors Kristine Hirt, of Simpsonville, and Andrea Marshall, of Greenwood, will study at Florence University of the Arts in Florence, Italy.
Stone said eight students, a record number for Lander, will spend their fall semester at the University of Winchester in England. They are: English major Mellissa Elledge, of Ware Shoals; education majors Olivia Gay, of Pawleys Island, Hollis Kimbrell, of Rock Hill, and Victoria Richards, of Elgin; psychology majors Haley Johnson, of Williamston, Kegan Leissner, of Jefferson, Ga., and Devin Reid, of Rock Hill; and political science major Kimberly Modica, of Waterloo.
Four students will take advantage of newly arranged semester abroad opportunities next fall. Cody Beard, a music major from Greenwood, will study at Salzburg College in Salzburg, Austria; Spanish major Nancy Luna, of Walhalla, is enrolled at Universidad del Pacifico in Santiago, Chile; Mary Robinson, of West Union, who is also a Spanish major, will study at Excel Spanish Language Center in Cusco, Peru; and Lauren Shiflet, of Greenwood whose minor is French, will be enrolled at Institut Europèen de Francais in Montpellier, France.
Stone expressed his gratitude to Lander's Study Abroad Committee and other faculty members for helping students enhance their college experiences by taking advantage of international study opportunities.
