Internationally known, award-winning ceramics artist Carolyn Genders, of East Sussex, England, appeared at Lander University recently to speak with students and local ceramists.
Genders demonstrated the techniques she uses in crafting and decorating her clay objects. In a biographical sketch, she explains that the year-round transformation of the landscape near her home in England influences her work. She said she creates forms and surfaces that strive to convey nuance of shape, balance and mass while creating mood and atmosphere.
Her audiences at Lander included 18 students who are enrolled in the visual arts program in the Department of Art, and several members of the Greenwood Area Studio Potters (GASP), and other community artists.
Assistant professor of art Sandy Singletary described Genders as "a superstar" of her craft, and said it was a wonderful experience for students to have the chance to observe as she demonstrated her ceramics techniques, and to ask questions.
Genders has written and contributed to several books and articles on ceramics. A Fellow of Britain's Craft Potters Association, she is a tutor at West Dean College in Sussex, England, and is in demand as a lecturer to a variety of groups and schools.
