A musical journey through American history will begin when the Lander University Wind Ensemble takes the stage for its Tuesday, Feb. 24, show.
The concert starts at 8 p.m. in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. Admission is free.
Selections to be performed include "Variations on a Shaker Melody," by the dean of American composers, Aaron Copland; "Candide Suite," the well-known Leonard Bernstein composition; and ragtime music's most influential hit, Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag."
Other highlights include "Chorale and Alleluia," by Howard Hanson; "Grand Teton," from "The American Scene," by William Grant Still; and "Robinson's Grand Entrèe," by march music bandmaster and composer Karl King.
William Schuman's "New England Triptych" will feature graduating seniors Samuel Mhasvi on euphonium and Cody Beard on trumpet. "The Stars and Stripes Forever," John Philip Sousa's magnum opus, will showcase piccolo players Brittany Gionakis, Lindsey Maloney and Adjunct Instructor of Music Dawn Gallo.
Works by younger composers are also in the mix. They include Samuel Hazo's "Ride," described by Associate Professor of Music Dr. Reed Gallo, who directs the ensemble, as "a nice wrapping up of our ride through American history."
Gallo invited the public to join him for an enjoyable evening of music.
"I guarantee you'll enjoy this performance," he said.
