The Lander Alumni Association will hold the third annual Lander Lily Luncheon, on Thursday, Dec. 10, at noon at the Lander Foundation and Alumni Center at 302 Hampton St.
Myra Greene, director of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving, said the term "Lander Lily" has been used by female students since the early days of the university, which was founded in 1872 as Williamston Female College, and it continued over the years. Greene, a 1978 Lander graduate, added, "We use the term to identify with the women who came before us."
Lander's First Lady, Jessica Cosentino, will serve as the hostess for the event. Lander alumnae are encouraged to attend and bring members of the community to assist exceptional students with scholarship funds.
Proceeds from the luncheon will be directed to the Lander Lily Funded Scholarship, which was established last year and is awarded to students in the university's Honors College. Melody Brawner, the first recipient of the scholarship, will be the main speaker at the luncheon, while Honors student and pianist Jeremiah Grooms will provide entertainment featuring favorite Christmas tunes. Honors College art student Molly Ott has designed original pottery vases for the table decorations which will be available for sale. There will also be a silent auction featured as part of the fundraiser.
Tickets for the luncheon catered by Old Main Catering are priced at $20 and may be purchased at the Lander Foundation and Alumni Center, 302 Hampton Ave., in Greenwood, where the luncheon will be held or may be purchased by phone at 864-388-8351.
Greene encouraged alumnae who are unable to attend the luncheon to contribute to the Lander Lily Funded Scholarship by sending a donation to the Lander Alumni Affairs Office, 320 Stanley Ave., Greenwood, S.C., 29649.
