Lander University's Department of Music will present a recital, featuring violist Matthew Darsey, titled "Degenerates, Exiles, and Prisoners of the Third Reich," on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. in Lander's Barksdale Recital Hall.
The event is described as a synthesis of music and history, including works by composers Oedoen Partos, Ernst Krenek, Jacques Chailley and Olivier Messiaen, all of whom were negatively impacted by the Nazi regime.
Darsey is both a performer and an educator. A strong advocate of contemporary music, he performs as part of the MAPSensemble, a viola/piano/percussion trio, and he is a frequent guest artist with the Bechtler Ensemble and the Charlotte New Music Festival. He is a member of the faculty at Winthrop University, in Rock Hill.
Also appearing will be Amy Blackwood, who, since 2011, is a staff accompanist at Lander, working with singers, instrumentalists and choral ensembles. She has a master's degree in accompanying and chamber music from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, where she also performed in many collaborative recitals.
The recital is free and open to the public.
