Lander Readies for Spring Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 12

More than 300 graduates are expected to cross the stage and receive their degrees on Saturday, May 12, during Lander University's 157th Commencement Exercises. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. in Finis Horne Arena.

Lander's 2017 Distinguished Professor Gina Dunn will give the keynote address during the commencement ceremony. A 1994 graduate of Lander University, Dunn taught at Emerald High School for seven years before returning to Lander as an adjunct professor in 2002. Since then, she has risen steadily through the ranks of the university and is now an associate professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computing.

Commencement Ceremony in Finis Horne Arena - Tickets required
All guests, including small children, must have a ticket to enter the arena. Doors open at 9 a.m. and seating is general admission. Family members and friends are encouraged to arrive early and be seated by 10:30 a.m. to avoid standing in long lines. Handicapped guests may be dropped off at the circular drive close to the entrance of Horne Arena. Visitors should allow ample time for parking and security checks. "The doors are locked 15 minutes before the ceremony begins," said campus Police Chief Eddie Briggs. "Those who arrive at the last minute are taking a risk that they might not being able to get inside the arena."

Livestream in Abney Cultural Center Auditorium
Latecomers and those without tickets will be directed to the Abney Cultural Center, where the ceremony will be broadcast via closed circuit television (CCTV) and projected onto a large screen inside the auditorium. No tickets are required to enter the auditorium.

Security Measures - Clear Bag Policy
In an effort to provide a safer environment for our graduates and their guests, university police will enforce a clear bag policy. Guests may bring a clear backpack or bag, or a small clutch. Security measures also include metal detectors at both main entrances of Horne Arena. All items are subject to search.

Livestream on Website
For those who cannot attend, a live stream of the ceremony will broadcast on Lander's website at www.lander.edu. The stream begins shortly before 11 a.m. that morning.

Post Ceremony - Diploma Pickup
Upon conclusion of the ceremony, graduates will be led in formal recession to nearby Joe V. Chandler Center, where they will receive their official diplomas. Graduates will then join family, friends and faculty outside on the front lawn near the fountain for a Graduate Reception.
