Lander University Police (LUPD) conducted an active shooter training session last week on the university's campus.
More than a dozen officers, including local school resource officers (SROs) from the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office, took part in the three-hour exercise, held in the university's Carnell Learning Center. Leading the training was LUPD Sgt. James Burke, who recently earned certification as an Active Shooter Response Instructor through the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, with assistance from LUPD Lt. Dena Gossett, a certified Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) and Civilian Response to Active Shooter Event Instructor. About 25 Lander staff, faculty and student volunteers also participated in the session.
LUPD Chief Greg Allen said the department plans to conduct additional training on campus this fall, including a possible large-scale exercise involving multiple law enforcement agencies and first responders.
