The community is invited to join local and state-level civic leaders from various backgrounds for a thought-provoking discussion on going beyond voting to become a truly engaged citizen.
Lander University's panel on civic engagement will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center. The event is part of Lander's "Achieving the Promise" series, sponsored by South Carolina Humanities. The series aims to empower students and community members on how to model good dialogue in a contentious political environment.
Panelists for the event include former Congressman Bob Inglis, founder and executive director of the Energy and Commerce Initiative at George Mason University; Ms. Lisa Lane and Ms. Susan Sachs, co-founders and co-executive directors of the Project HOPE Foundation; The Rev. Christopher Thomas, director of the Benjamin E. Mays Historical Preservation Site; and Mr. Jason Zacher, senior vice president for business advocacy for the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and executive director of the Upstate Chamber Coalition, of which the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce is a member.
The event will be moderated by Dr. Ashley Woodiwiss, chair of Lander's Department of Government, Criminology and Sociology, and project director for Lander's "Achieving the Promise" initiative. "Our panelists will help to open up our civic imagination," said Woodiwiss. "As advocates and activists who have experiences inside and outside the halls of government, we are excited that these speakers can join together on Lander's Cultural Center stage."
