Thirty-five high school juniors and seniors from the GLEAMS area took part in Lander University's orientation sessions for its Dual Enrollment program. Shelby Dominick Reed, director of Lander's Special Cohort Outreach & Bridge Programs, expects the number to increase to more than 100 students when classes begin in the fall.
Through Lander's Dual Enrollment program, participants earn college credit while still in high school. They can complete their courses either in person while in a Lander classroom, online or through a hybrid combination of both forms. Just like all Lander students, Dual Enrollment participants will enjoy a host of benefits, including free tutoring in Lander's Academic Success Center, Fitness Center and swimming pool.
With a tradition of being actively engaged on campus both inside and outside of the Lander classroom, Dominick Reed says Dual Enrollment students typically adjust well to campus life. "Based upon our experiences, Dual Enrollment students assimilate beautifully into our university environment and they tend to perform especially well academically," she said.
During their customized orientation session at Lander, Dual Enrollment students were treated to a personalized tour of campus so they could become accustomed to the campus layout.
"My plan is to become a civil engineer," said Ware Shoals High School and Lander Dual Enrollment student Adam Hicks, "and my guidance counselor emphasized the benefit of getting a jump start on my college career."
