Representatives from 62 employers and graduate programs took part in Lander University's Graduate School & Career Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the Grier Student Center. It was the largest turnout yet for the annual event.
"In addition to exploring career opportunities, I came to the fair to make as many professional relationships and contacts as possible," said Chasten Beck, a senior from Greenwood majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in management and public relations. "While Lander professors teach what they're supposed to, they also teach more than they're supposed to, and that includes tips for how to make connections and market yourself. Learning those skills is so important for the development of your confidence."
Employers taking part in the fair included the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Fujifilm, Teijin Carbon Fibers, Verizon and VELUX America.
Representatives from graduate programs included Lander University, the University of South Carolina School of Law, Winthrop University, Troy University, Clemson University and the Darla Moore School of Business.
"We're always in hiring mode," said Michelle Berry, a recruiter for the FBI. Berry said she was on campus to speak with students who were majoring in specific disciplines. "We're especially interested in talking with students majoring in computer science, biology, physics, nursing, mathematics and foreign languages."
Martine Fezler, program assistant for Lander's Department of Graduate Studies, spoke with students about the university's Master of Science in Management and the Master of Science in Emergency Management - both completely online programs. She also provided information about Lander's Master of Education in Montessori Education and the Master of Education in Teaching and Learning with concentrations in Instructional Technology and Diverse Learners programs.
"Classes for the Master of Science in Management will begin in the spring, but we're taking applications now. With business being such a popular degree for our undergraduates, this degree is a natural fit, and it's a valuable degree for all majors," she said.
