Friends and donors of Lander University celebrated its 148th birthday in a big way this week by raising $40,000 during the university's inaugural Day of Giving.
From noon on Feb. 11 to noon Feb. 12, nearly 160 donors from 10 states expressed their generosity for how their Lander experience prepared them for their lives and careers.
"We're overwhelmed and thankful to the generous supporters of Lander," said Mike Worley, vice president for University Advancement. "Our Day of Giving clearly united all of our friends and supporters. Each gift will be used effectively as we continue to transform the lives of our students."
Support for Lander during the 24-hour campaign came from all areas of the Lander family. While 50 percent of the gifts came from Lander alumni, Lander staff generated 26.6 percent of the total. Lander faculty accounted for 13 percent of gift totals, and current Lander students participated as well.
While making their gifts, donors were able to specify the area or program at Lander they wanted to support. While some chose to direct their gift to a precise scholarship, department or athletic program, others chose to give to the Lander Excellence Fund, which helps the university address its greatest needs. Some donors participated in matching challenges among alumni groups, fraternities and sororities, parent clubs, and academic and co-curricular activities.
