Lander University's College of Education is participating in a grant, funded by the STEM Centers of South Carolina, to help students at Eleanor S. Rice Elementary School solve problems through experiential learning. The "Better Together!" initiative will join teachers, Lander education majors, researchers, engineers and fourth- and fifth-grade students in two, distinct design challenges. Fifth graders will become mathematicians, engineers and scientists by creating the chassis for prototype vehicles using scraps from VELUX's 3D printers. Fourth-grade students will design, build, and test prosthetic parts for animals to survive in a diversity of habitats. These collaborative, community-building projects of STEM's "Need for Speed and Innovative Adaptations" will be shared at a public STEAMfest event in the spring of 2021 at Rice Elementary, part of Greenwood School District 50. Grant participants include, from left, Anne Burkes, Greenwood School District 50 Gifted and Talented Teacher at Rice and Woodfields Elementary Schools, Jenny Risinger, District 50 director of professional development, and Dr. Susan Fernandez, Lander University College of Education associate professor.
