Lander University senior Jacob Mitchell, of Summerville, has been awarded the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. The award is named for the legendary musician who changed the course of jazz as a genre.
"Jacob is one of the most versatile musicians I know," said Robert Gardiner, professor of Music at Lander and founder of the South Carolina Jazz Foundation. "His primary instrument is guitar, but he is also an accomplished pianist and vocalist. He has played bassoon and baritone saxophone in our Wind Ensemble, bass in our pep band and trombone for our jazz ensemble. I have given this award to only a small number of students. Jacob's contributions to our music program and to Lander University have been significant and unique. I'm proud to have been one of his teachers."
Mitchell is well known among the Lander student body for his numerous performances throughout the academic years. "I always loved playing at the tree lighting, it's my favorite time of year," he said. "I would set up the sound and lights with the tech crew all day and then perform holiday music for Lander's students. It was always so much fun to see everyone layered up enjoying each other's company for the holiday."
