Lander University is getting students ready for its annual graduate/career fair, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., with two sessions offering help with resume preparation.
The first "Resume Express" was held on Thursday, Oct. 1. The second will be in Lander's Grier Student Center on Tuesday, Oct. 6, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Alumni are invited, in addition to current students, and no appointment is necessary.
"You can't find that perfect job if you don't have your resume ready," said Lander Student Employment Coordinator Courtney Carpenter, who is helping with the events.
"The quickness of it is something I think students are going to really like," Carpenter said of the review sessions. "We're not going to just cross through and highlight things. We're also going to pass out resources that cover topics such as formatting your resume, and we'll follow up with an email."
She said that 15 employers and 41 graduate schools are participating in this year's fair, which will be entirely virtual. Students and alumni can register by going to My Lander (mylander.lander.edu) and clicking on the Handshake option at the top of the page. They can sign up for either group or individual sessions with employers and graduate school representatives, she said, and "they can do as many as they want."
Employers and graduate school representatives will get a list of the students who attended their sessions, "so that they can reach out to those students afterwards. They'll have access to all their resumes and profile information," she said.
Carpenter noted the comfort level that students today have with computers, and she said she believes the online format for this year's fair will be very successful.
To encourage participation, fair organizers are raffling off gift cards to Bearcat Shop and Starbuck's. "And that's for any student who registers and attends a group or an individual session," she said.
