Lander University has announced four appointments to The Lander Foundation Board of Directors. Created in 1948, the foundation was restructured in 1973 as an independent, nonprofit organization responsible for receiving, managing and investing gifts to support the mission of Lander University.
The new appointees are Katherine Finkbeiner, the Rev. Doug Kauffmann and Theo Lane, all of Greenwood, and Terrell Turner of Charlotte, N.C.
Katherine Finkbeiner, '71
Finkbeiner, a 1971 graduate of Lander University, has been devoted to the University throughout the years in many areas of service. An avid athletics donor, Finkbeiner was president of the Greenwood Tower Club and has served multiple terms on the Lander University Alumni Association Board.
She was the 2017 recipient of the Grace Iler Norman Alumni Award. After a distinguished career as an educator, Finkbeiner retired from Greenwood School District 50. She continues to volunteer at the school district and is a part-time faculty member at Lander. She and her husband Erwin Finkbeiner are part of a growing Lander family: their two daughters and sons-in-law are Lander alumni.
Rev. Doug Kauffmann
Kauffmann earned his bachelor's degree in history in 1975 from Duke University and a master's of divinity degree from the Southern Seminary in 1978. He was ordained to the preaching ministry in July 1978 at Callie Self Baptist Church in Greenwood.
An associate pastor at Zebulon Baptist Church, 1981-1983, Kauffmann was pastor of McCormick First Baptist Church, 1985-1992; chaplain and director of Family Services at the John de la Howe School, 1992-1996, and pastor and chaplain at the Connie Maxwell Baptist Church and Children's Home, 1996-2016. He has been an adjunct professor in religious studies at Lander since 2007.
His service to the Greenwood community includes board membership for Connie Maxwell Children's Home, Meg's House and Community Initiatives; moderator for the Lakelands Baptist Association, and member of the Greenwood Rotary Club. He has been a volunteer teacher for English as a Second Language and also a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He is the author of "Tobias's Story: The Life and Civil War Career of Tobias B. Kaufman."
Kauffmann is married to Sally Hill Kauffman, a 1974 alumna of Lander. They have two daughters and two grandchildren.
Theo Lane
Lane is manager of Government and Community Relations for Duke Energy South Carolina. He attended The Citadel and the University of South Carolina and earned a master's degree in education from Columbia College.
Active in civic leadership positions throughout South Carolina, Lane has served on the boards of Leadership South Carolina, the S.C. Football Hall of Fame, the Upstate Carolinas Region Medical Center, the Greenwood Community Foundation, the Greenwood Genetics Center Foundation and the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce.
Elected to the Greenwood County Council in 2016, Lane is a former governor's board appointee to the Burton Center for Disabilities and Special Needs. He is a graduate of Leadership South Carolina and the Riley Diversity Leadership Institute at Furman University.
Lane has a deep commitment to higher education in the Palmetto State. He has held board membership for the S.C. Association of Independent Colleges, the Partnership Foundation of USC Sumter and the Piedmont Technical College Foundation. At Lander, he has served on the President's Council on Diversity.
The father of two sons, Lane is the recipient of Duke Energy's prestigious Robinson Award, which recognized his philanthropic work for special needs children in South Carolina.
Terrell Turner, '07
Turner is a Certified Public Accountant, finance leader, podcast host, speaker and founder of a consulting firm that focuses on making accounting and finance less complicated for business owners and business leaders.
He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Lander University in 2007 and a master's degree in accountancy from the University of Notre Dame in 2008. He launched his career in public accounting with internationally acclaimed Ernst & Young. Turner continued his career in multiple finance leadership roles throughout the United States and Brazil and with Fortune 500 companies, such as Navistar and General Electric.
After years in the corporate world, Turner launched his own consulting firm, the TLTurner Group, and a top-rated podcast, "Business Talk Library," which features interviews with top entrepreneurs and business leaders from around the world.
In addition to his consulting business, podcasts and speaking engagements, Turner enjoys spending time with his wife, Lola Turner, and traveling.
The new appointees join current board members Dr. Lorraine Angelino, '05, the board's chair; Holly Bracknell; John Craig; Terry Evans, '76; Rodney Jones, '08; Murry Kinard, '90; Stephan Moyan, '92; and Steve Wohlwend, '08.
Non-voting board members are Dr. Richard Cosentino, president of Lander University; Dr. Stacie Bowie, vice president for Finance and Administration; Sandy Singletary, chair of the Art Department; Dr. Holisa Wharton, dean of the William Preston Turner School of Nursing; and Dr. Boyd Yarbrough, vice president for Student Affairs. Mike Worley, Lander's vice president for University Advancement, is the foundation's executive director.
