The Peach Belt Conference is in the news with exciting sports events in the month of March. But did you know that the conference also sponsors the annual Peach Belt Conference Juried Art Exhibit in March?
The 2021 exhibit is putting the spotlight on students in Lander's Department of Art, who dominated the exhibit's two award categories. Of the six awards given, Lander students won four of the top honors in the General Category and the Campus Spirit Category.
Katherine Rumminger, a senior from Liberty, won second place in the General Category with her steel and ribbon sculpture titled, "Wendy's Daughter." Lander students won all three awards for Campus Spirit. Honorees include first place, Ashley Daniela Garcia, a junior from Simpsonville; second place, Brianna Clayton, a senior from Greenwood, and third place, Tien Mai, a junior from Greenville. The four students have studied sculpture with Doug McAbee, a Lander associate professor of art.
"Lander's success in the competition underscores the University's reputation as a growing leader in art education and ability for attracting talented students," said Sandy Singletary, chair of the Lander University Department of Art.
"Our students consistently are competing at top levels in exhibits and juried shows," Singletary said. "We could not be more proud of their hard work and dedication, especially during a year of great challenges. Our students are excelling in the classroom and beyond."
