“Medicine moves fast,” and advances in technology and medications are making a difference in gynecological and obstetrical care for women, Dr. Amy Forrest said during a recent program in the “Medically Speaking” series at Lander University. Forrest joined Dr. Matt Logan, president and CEO of Self Regional Healthcare, for the discussion, titled “Taking Care of Your Well-Being.”
A board-certified gynecologist and obstetrician, Forrest said one of the greatest advances in women’s healthcare is the availability of 3D mammography in Greenwood, which helps physicians detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. Robotic technology, also being used at Self Regional Healthcare, “is making a difference in what we can accomplish,” said Forrest, noting that “you can take complex surgery and make it minimally invasive.” The discussion covered topics such as screening for cervical and breast cancer, birth control options for women, bone density, osteoporosis and risk factors for other diseases.
