Dr. David Zinn Receives Lander’s Junior Faculty Teaching Award

David ZinnDr. David Zinn, assistant professor of sports management, for Lander University’s College of Business, has been awarded the Junior Faculty Teaching Award for the academic year of 2023-2024.

“I am honored and humbled to have been considered for this recognition,” Dr. Zinn remarked. “And I am exceedingly grateful to work with an outstanding faculty at an institution that values teaching, appreciate the support of my colleagues, and am excited to work with fantastic students in the College of Business on a daily basis.”

Dr. James Colbert, Jr., vice president for academic affairs and provost, said, “Dr. Zinn’s presence on campus, and involvement with students has contributed to a major growth in the sports management program, which has more than tripled the number of students majoring in the program.”

Highly regarded by students and faculty, Dr. Zinn is also the University’s NCAA faculty athletic representative.

In the past two years, over 50 students have gained valuable experience by volunteering at eight regional sporting events including major NCAA, Peach Belt, and PGA events. 

Additionally, 1,500 hours of work has been completed by sports management majors enrolled in internship classes in the 2023-2024 academic year. Dr. Zinn’s efforts helped Lander become the first sports management program in the state of South Carolina to ever be represented at the Breaking into Sports Job Fair held at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee.

The Junor Faculty Teaching Award winner has recently shared his experiential and active learning pedagogies at teaching conferences and is constantly working to further refine his teaching methodologies in hopes of increasing student success. He also has more than a dozen publications to his credit.

Dr. Zinn holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and social studies from West Virginia University, master’s degree in sports administration from the University of Tennessee (4.0 GPA); master’s in secondary education and teaching from University of the Cumberlands (4.0 GPA); and Global Sports Leadership degree from East Tennessee State University (4.0 GPA).

The Junior Faculty Teaching Award winner came to Lander in August of 2021, and has taught courses in professional development, principles of management, sport management, sport marketing, sport law, facility management, and sport finance.

 

About the award:

The award is given annually to a junior faculty member who demonstrates the qualities associated with effective teaching. Each applicant for the award must prepare a portfolio which documents the following:

  • Substantive innovative use of methods of teaching, including technology, when appropriate.
  • A strong record of attendance and participation in conferences and other professional venues that address teaching.
  • Evidence that the faculty member has incorporated relevant and recent developments in the field, where appropriate, into courses taught.
  • Quality of publications, presentations, exhibitions or performances at state, regional and national conferences, or other professional venues.
