New students and a new year full of potential have arrived.

Lander University celebrated the newest Bearcats on Friday with the Lander Launch, which brought students, faculty and staff together to celebrate Lander’s incoming students.

Friday afternoon began with a big welcome by faculty and staff as students made their way into Finis Horne Arena for an assembly. The assembly was followed by a cookout and organization fair to bring students together and introduce them to the faces and opportunities around campus. Students in the Class of 2028 also gathered together for a giant portrait to mark the start of their time at Lander.

Lander President Richard Cosentino gave the students three pieces of advice during Friday’s assembly: begin with the end in mind, act now, and do your part.

Amelia Beasley, a junior business administration student from Elgin, spoke about the importance of getting involved while at Lander.

Beasley, who is also president of the Student Government Association, encouraged students to get involved around the school, take advantage of every opportunity and to use their voices for change.

“Our university is a place where ideas flourish and innovation thrives,” she said.

“You will encounter subjects that challenge your intellect and spark your curiosity. You will form friendships that will last a lifetime and build networks that extend far beyond these walls. You will face obstacles that test your resilience and opportunities that inspire your ambitions.”

Ashton Metts, a senior nursing student from Saluda, spoke about lessons she has learned while at Lander, especially advocating for oneself, and the realities of one’s personal life continuing during college.

Fall semester classes began at Lander on Monday, Aug. 19.
