Narrator: This is Lander 2Day: a mix of campus news and short stories in
two minutes or less.

For Lander students, summer break doesn’t always mean a break from
learning. Many students use the summer months to take on summer jobs,
study tours, internships and other experiential learning opportunities.

Recently, members of Lander’s Department of Art hit the beaches of South
Carolina to showcase their creativity through sand sculptures—and were
recognized for their artwork at an international art festival.

Lander art alumna Katherine Rumminger, art professor Doug McAbee, and
Bachelor of Fine Arts students Elena Medlin and Cathryn Burger
participated in the 37th annual Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpture
Competition in Isle of Palms, South Carolina.

The annual competition is part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, a
multi-day event featuring music, theatre, dance, visual art, literary
readings and more.

The Lander team’s entry, a large sculpture of a woman’s head titled Miss
Spoleto, received second place overall.

At Lander, mastering concepts such as ephemeral art—works of art
designed to be temporary—isn’t limited to classroom discussion. Instead,
students take advantage of opportunities to learn through hands-on
experience.
