Choirs

University Singers

University Singers continues a long-standing tradition of choral singing at Lander University, and the men and women of this choir come from a wide variety of majors across the campus and from the larger Greenwood community.

The ensemble welcomes beginning and experienced singers who want to be part of a committed community of musical learners. Fast-paced rehearsals focus on great choral music of varying difficulty from the Renaissance to the 21st century.

Keith Jameson (Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, English National Opera) leads this ensemble, helping students obtain necessary skills and musical knowledge for a lifetime of music making.

Students who are interested in joining our choral ensembles and learning about the audition process should contact Keith Jameson at krichard@lander.edu.

Old Main Singers

Lander University’s chamber choir, Old Main Singers, is named for the oldest and highest tower on campus. This auditioned ensemble sings a repertoire of masterworks from plainchant to the 21st century.

The men and women of Old Main Singers bring their musical skills together each semester to create thoughtful, artistic performances with notable professionalism and excellence. Ensemble members develop valuable connections with each other and with the music they perform.

Students who are interested in joining our choral ensembles and learning about the audition process should contact Keith Jameson at krichard@lander.edu.

Opera Workshop

Lander University's Opera Workshop is designed to provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to learn about stagecraft and the art of operatic singing. Students are assigned principal, supporting, and chorus roles and are exposed to techniques involving character development, stage deportment, and costuming. Weekly vocal coachings and staging rehearsals prepare students for the demands of operatic performance.

Workshop repertoire has included scenes from Barab's Little Red Riding Hood, Bizet's Carmen, Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Criswell's Rhythm and Rhyme in Mother Goose Time, Delibe's Lakmé, Donizetti's The Elixir of Love, Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, Menotti's The Consul, The Medium, and The Old Maid and the Thief, Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, and The Marriage of Figaro, Offenbach's La Périchole, Puccini's La Bohème, and Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier.

Opera Workshop is offered every other academic year. Students are required to be concurrently enrolled in applied voice or to have had extensive vocal and acting experience. Please contact Opera Workshop director Amy Blackwood at ablackwood@lander.edu for further information.

BarberCats

While they can’t offer an actual shave and a haircut, the BarberCats at Lander University are here to entertain the Lander campus community with their unique sound of four-part barbershop-style harmony. Completely student-run, the group sings in the community, for the school, and works closely with the music department faculty.
