Middle Level Education majors prepare to serve students in grades 5-8 through specialized education courses that emphasize the development of young adolescents and methods that engage middle level learners, as well as study in a specific content area.
In the Middle Level education major, education majors choose one of four concentration areas: English, Mathematics, Science or Social Studies. Our majors then engage in in-depth study in that content area, preparing them to work with a particular content area in a middle school setting.
At Lander, we also work closely with public school officials to maintain a curriculum that enables you to obtain the knowledge and skills needed to meet the challenges of teaching.
All teacher education programs at Lander University are guided by Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) standards, a nationally recognized model which outlines teacher competencies "to ensure that every K-12 student reaches the goal of being ready to enter college or the workforce in today's world."
Concentrations
English Language Arts
Our English concentration prepares future teachers to become effective, inspiring middle school teachers. Students in this concentration take 24 hours of English courses to become familiar with the subject matter and learn the ins and outs of teaching English.
Mathematics
The mathematics concentration prepares future teachers who inspire confidence, curiosity and problem-solving skills within their students at the middle school level. Students in this concentration take a variety of mathematics courses designed to prepare them to be proficient in teaching math.
Science
The science concentration gives future middle level teachers the knowledge needed to inspire their students to explore the world. Students in this concentration take a variety of science courses, including chemistry, environmental science, geology and more in order to become an effective educator.
Social Studies
The social studies concentration prepares future educators to shape middle level students to understand the ideas, people and events that have shaped the world. Students in this concentration take a variety of courses in history, economics, world civilizations and more to become an effective educator.
