What is Montessori?

Dr. Maria Montessori, who originated this approach to educating children, was an Italian physician whose work with young special-needs children led her to design innovative materials and activities that provide hands-on learning experiences.

Montessori is an approach based on the belief that all children are unique and deserve classrooms and teachers that support and respect their individual development. Additionally, it is based on the premise that the most important years for learning are from birth through elementary school.

Lander offers three Montessori programs, each one designed for a different type of student:

Early Childhood Education, Montessori emphasis

  • Undergraduate students earn American Montessori Society certification and a South Carolina Montessori endorsement while they complete their degree in Early Childhood Education.

M.Ed. in Montessori Education

  • Designed for teachers who do not already hold Montessori certification
  • Students earn American Montessori Society certification in one of three levels: Early Childhood, Elementary I, or Elementary II.
  • Taught in a teacher-friendly format that combines online, hybrid, and summer courses.
