Admission and Progression in the Nursing Major

Pre-licensure Students

Students are admitted to the major each fall and spring. In order to qualify for admission to the nursing major, students must meet the university requirements for admission. Upon admission to the university, students are eligible to enroll in Lower Level courses. The Lower Level curriculum covers the first two years of the program and includes General Education, elective, and introductory nursing courses. Upon successful completion of Lower Level coursework, students are notified in writing by the School of Nursing of their eligibility to progress to Upper Level Nursing courses.

In order to progress to Upper Level, students must meet the following requirements:

1. Earn a "C" or better in the nine required prerequisites and the three Lower Level NURS courses: ENGL 101 and ENGL 102; MATH 121 or MATH 123 or MATH 141; MATH 211, CHEM 105 or CHEM 111; CHEM 106 or CHEM 112; BIOL 202 (Human Anatomy), BIOL 203 (Human Physiology), BIOL 204 (Microbiology), NURS 165 (History and Trends), NURS 235 (Lifespan Wellness), and NURS 304 (Pathophysiology).
2. Earn at least a 2.8 GPA on the nine required courses: ENGL 101 and ENGL 102; MATH 121 or MATH 123 or MATH 141; MATH 211, CHEM 105 or CHEM 111; CHEM 106 or CHEM 112; BIOL 202 (Human Anatomy), BIOL 203 (Human Physiology), BIOL 204 (Microbiology). This includes those courses taken at any institution of higher education. Students must have completed their required prerequisite science and math courses (listed above) within 7 years prior to progressing to Upper Level nursing courses (NURS).
3. Earn a Lander Institutional GPA of at least 2.8. In addition, students must also complete all General Education requirements and electives before progressing to Upper Level.
4. Students are required to complete clinical agency requirements prior to enrolling in Upper Level nursing courses.

Transfers students must be admitted to the nursing major and complete at least 30 hours of college-level coursework including 12 credit hours at Lander.

In order to progress to Upper Level, students must meet the following requirements:

1. Earn a "C" or better in the nine required prerequisites and the three Lower Level NURS courses: ENGL 101 and ENGL 102; MATH 121 or MATH 123 or MATH 141; MATH 211, CHEM 105 or CHEM 111; CHEM 106 or CHEM 112; BIOL 202 (Human Anatomy), BIOL 203 (Human Physiology), BIOL 204 (Microbiology), NURS 165(History and Trends), NURS 235 (Lifespan Wellness), and NURS 304 (Pathophysiology).
2. Earn at least a 2.8 GPA on the nine required courses: ENGL 101 and ENGL 102; MATH 121 or MATH 123 or MATH 141; MATH 211, CHEM 105 or CHEM 111; CHEM 106 or CHEM 112; BIOL 202 (Human Anatomy), BIOL 203 (Human Physiology), BIOL 204 (Microbiology). This includes course taken at any institution of higher learning. Students must have completed their required prerequisite science and math courses (listed above) within 7 years prior to progressing to Upper Level nursing courses (NURS).
